A design proposal to build a dedicated surau (musolla) for the students at the Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) campus to use it for their daily prayers. The surau will become a feature located in the middle of a central landscape courtyard which will be surrounded by the various faculty buildings.
As the main prayer hall is located on an elevated area, the space underneath can be used for other activities or simply as a shelter. The surau is fronting a lake which will also act as a retention pond. The setting will allow the surau to be a feature within the campus.
A ramp and staircase are placed following the circular shape of the surau to access the main prayer hall. The ramp will be used for the handicaped users to access the floor above which will house main prayer hall, ablution and over-spill areas.
Although, the external shape of the surau is circular, the main prayer hall is in the shape of a square reflecting the shape of the Ka’aba in Makkah.
Lightweight screening is placed around the circular shape of the surau. The screening allows for natural ventilation to floor inside the surau and cool the spaces inside. Diffused light will also be able to penetrate through the perforated walls of the screening device used as the enclosure to the surau.
Below the elevated main prayer hall, the area below allows for an open multi-purpose area or used as an amphitheatre.
Double glazed glass dome is also placed above the main prayer hall to bring light into the main prayer hall and will also be a feature of the TVET Surau. The surau will become the jewel of the campus.
