The project is part of the infrastructural development of Samalaju Industrial Park, the centre of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), Bintulu Sarawak. Japan’s Tokuyama Corp, formed in 1918, sets up Tokuyama Malaysia Sdn Bhd to construct a RM2.36 billion plant to produce polycrystalline silicon for solar panels. The whole development covers an area of approximate 200ha and to be implemented in five phases. Phase I and Phase II respectively will have an annual production capacity of 6 000 metric ton and 13,800 metric ton of industrial materials annually. Under Phase V, it is forecasted that an additional production with a capacity of 68 000 metric ton of the silicon will be produced. The project site was chosen to build a primary overseas production plant in Malaysia because of the competitive cost, the abundant hydropower in Sarawak and the available cutting edge technology. |
