Background Information
The design for a new Ferry Terminal for Labuan Island of Borneo is initiated to replace the existing aging Ferry Terminal, next to the present location. The Ferry Terminal is planned to cater for both domestic and international passengers from nearby Brunei. This new Ferry Terminal is needed to upgrade the basic infrastructure in order to transform this tiny island of 70,000 people into a world class off-shore banking and financial center hub of Asia.
Design Approach
In the initial design, the new Ferry Terminal was planned for four jetties, which can receive up to eight ferries, a jetty for the local population and nearby islands, observation deck and a customs and immigration office. Architecturally, the vaulted metal roof structure reflects gentle “waves” flowing to the shores of Labuan. The structure also reflects a friendly, comfortable and inspiring settings that will leave a lasting impression to each visitor that passes through the gates of this terminal building. Part of the Ferry Terminal will be opened and naturally ventilated. Only the passengers waiting area and custom offices will be air-conditioned.
