The project vision is to create a student friendly and eco friendly international educational university. The sustainable Eco Campus ISO 1400:2004 Standard of EMS maintained by ISO 14000 Environmental Management will minimize harmful effects on the environment caused by its activities. It will also continually improve its environmental performance. The 145.54 acre site is strategically located in the heart of Bandar Baru Nilai, about 45 km from Kuala Lumpur, and 30 km from KLIA (international airport) in Sepang. The existing area around this site includes a private university and industrial, commercial and residential units.
Manipal International University, is a joint venture project in establishing a tertiary educational centre between a local counterpart company and Manipal Education group from India. Manipal University is better known in Malaysia for its world renown Medical Faculty. However, in India Manipal University is also known for other university courses. It is their aspiration to build a world class university campus outside India. The Manipal International University campus in Nilai will be their best planned and designed campus. The first phase building is the construction of the Engineering Faculty which can accommodate up to 3,500 students. The whole area for the university campus covers a site measuring approximately 145.54 acres. The site is well suited for a University campus as it is located in an area that is known as an education centre just outside Kuala Lumpur.
The master plan designed by ATSA Architects includes several different buildings for various faculties such as, Engineering Faculty, Business Faculty, Law Faculty and Architectural Faculty. A Library and Chancellor Building was also added into the Master-plan. Other amenities such as the student centre, a sports complex complete with a small stadium and field will be added to the master plan for the campus. It was envisaged that the campus will be an active and bustling university which will be fully utilized by students or public. There are also plans to build student housing that will be designed to encourage the interaction between students and also conducive for proper student living. The university campus is also planned as a working university complete with adequate shaded pathways. The entire development of university campus is scheduled to meet its target by the year 2020, with its plan to accommodate approximately 20,000 students. The vision of the owners of Manipal International University is to build a university of the 21st century incorporating and integrating various traditional elements with bespoken modern features. The University is planned to be the first university in Malaysia ( or even the world ) to be rated highest rating scale by LEED which is Platinum. It is planned to be one of the best University in Malaysia.
To provide a unique, innovative and practical design that will become a Bandar Baru Nilai landmark. Guiding principles include making Manipal University a functional tertiary learning institution with minimal changes to the existing topography and natural contour. Key focus areas for the student friendly design include covered walkways connecting one building to another, and for conducive circulation.
The emphasis is also on providing adequate spaces for comfortable studying activities. There will be a smart zoning system for proximate location from one building to another as well as open spaces with lush greenery as a communal area for students. Design elements for Eco-friendly characteristics include usage of building orientation, lush opening, sun shading effect etc. In addition there will be solid water management, waste water management, rainwater harvesting and energy conservation through the use of renewable energy like solar.
